Moral Dilemma on Cheating

  1. Here’s an ethical dilemma from http://www.goodcharacter.com.  Read it through and answer the questions at the bottom through your blog.  Be honest and natural in your answers.  Please answer in full, complete sentences.

It’s midway through the spring semester, and you are taking a math test. You’ve been struggling all semester in this class, and you know that this test will form a big part of your grade. You feel like you are doing quite well on the test until you come to the last problem. It is worth 20 points and you just can’t remember how to solve it. As it happens, the class math whiz is sitting right in front of you and you can see he’s just finished it. You are close enough to see how he solved it, and you know that no teacher can see you if you cheat.

What do you do? I would just keep thinking and if I couldn’t get it, I would just try some random formula, but I would never cheat, especially on a test.

  2. Would you cheat? NO

  3. Whether you respond yes or no, explain your reasoning. Cheating is wrong unethical.

  4. Think of someone you have a great deal of respect for. Would that person cheat? Why or why not? I have a great deal of respect for Bill Gates because he is a good man and he would never cheat.

  5. What would you do if you cheated and then a fellow student confronted you and was angry about what you did? I really don’t know because I would not cheat.

  6. Suppose you cheated. If the teacher asked you the next day whether or not you cheated, would you confess or make something up? I would confess. I don’t lie to anyone unless it is obviously the right thing to do.

  7. Have you been in this situation? Would you change anything about your decision now? I have never been in this situation.

  8. Have you ever seen someone cheat in class? What did it feel like? I have witnessed someone cheating and I have heard of people that cheated on something and I was very angry with that person and I can not trust her anymore because she is still like that.

  9. If one person cheats in a class, do you think anyone else is affected? Why & how / Why not? Someone else might be affected if he/she is accused of letting the other person cheat.

  10. How big an issue is cheating in your school? Do you think it affects you? I think it is pretty big especially considering this is a prep school. I just get very angry whenever someone cheats because it is very bad and I just hate it.
